  • A wide angle view taken from the observation gantry towards the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. You can see some of the taller buildings which include the rocket assembly building and some of the launch platforms.

  • This sign is just below the observation gantry and it's the turn off to Pad 39B (going left). If you go straight you end up at Pad 39A. The red sign says launch date under review because they had found the stringer problems on the tank that Discovery was attached to and they had just rolled it back to the VAB and the launch date was not set yet.
  • A close up of Pad 39A. Discovery had just been rollerd back into the VAB to fix the stringer problems that were found while on the Pad. On the lower left you can see 8 cables that go from the tower to the lower left which are part of the emergency evacuation system that the astronauts can use if there are any problems while on the pad
  • Pad 39A shot from the observation gantry.
  • A closer view of Pad 39A.
  • These are the armored personnel carriers (APC) that the crew would use if they ever have an emergency and have to evacuate the shuttle. They would evacuate through the zip line system that comes out of the launch pad and it drops them off just behind these vehicles so the crew can get in, close the ramp, and have a somewhat safe way of evacuating the area.
  • This is Pad 39B which is being dismantled since the Space Shuttle program is coming to an end. A sad sight to see but hopefully this door closing will open a new door of planetary exploration.
  • Another shot of the remnants of Pad 39B.
  • View from the observation gantry looking out towards the two launch pads. On the right is 39A and on the left further back is the remnants of 39B. The wide gravel roads that you see are the "roads" used by the crawler transport.
  • A shot eastbound from the observation gantry. In the foreground is one of the two crawler transports used to move the shuttles from the Vehicle Assembly (VAB) building to the launch pads. The large square building on the left is the VAB where the shuttles are matted to the fuel tank and the solid rocket boosters. The tall tower on the right was built for the Constellation program that was supposed to come after the Space Shuttle but is now cancelled.
