  • Dogfight! A bald eagle and a red-tailed hawk caught in mid-air combat. This was shot in Yellowstone National Park. One of five in the series. The hawk, knowing that is is smaller (not as strong but much more agile) than the eagle, always tried to keep a higher altitude.

  • As this lone coyote was traveling over the partially frozen Lamar River it got to a spot where it did not like what it herd, saw, or felt and backtracked to find a different route. One miscalculation and it could mean a cold and slow end for it.

  • One of us must have moved around and attracted the attention of one of the coyotes. We were at a very safe distance and our biggest concern was not disturbing them as they ate.

  • Coyote family. It was fascinating to watch the interactions between the different members of this coyote family. The pup on the left wanted to play with the dominant member and was cautiously initiating the playing. Taken in Yellowstone National Park while on a tour with the Yellowstone Association ( http://www.yellowstoneassociation.org) edit

  • Sure enough, from just above them on the hill we spot not one, but three coyotes looking for an opportunity to catch some dinner.

  • These three are part of the herd of bison that was running away from something else and they stumbled into the scene that was unfolding of the coyotes trying to get one of the big horn sheep. Surviving in the winter in Yellowstone is tough and spending energy running is very costly for these bison. You can see the steam coming out of their nostrils as they stop and watch us.

  • Baby bison! Tough time of year to be born but he should make it! Notice how red his coat is compared to the other bison.
